Farm & Wilderness Camp Experience: Quaker-Inspired Simplicity, Social Justice, and Rugged Wilderness Living in Vermont's Open-Air Cabins Where Community, Sustainability, and Unplugged Adventure Create Transformative Summers
What Makes Farm and Wilderness Unique:
Farm & Wilderness stands out for its strong stance on social issues including racial integration (we were among the first private camps to become racially integrated), gender equality, and environmental sustainability. Our camps practice organic gardening and farming with Northeast Organic Farming Association certification and use composting toilets called "Kybos." Campers live in rustic accommodations like three-sided, open-air cabins or canvas structures tucked into the woods and along lakes, creating an authentic wilderness experience.
Culture and Vibe:
Our camp culture emphasizes "a life that is simple, rugged and exciting" where campers live in community with one another. The atmosphere blends "hard work and joyful play" with a focus on experiential education. Our parent's reviews describe it as an "idyllic location" built on "pillars of community and creativity" where children "learn to find their own strengths and see the strengths of others."
Quaker values form the essence of Farm & Wilderness, emphasizing simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equity, and sustainability. The camps embrace the Quaker concept that "The Light of the Spirit is in every person," fostering mutual respect for each person's unique qualities. Each morning begins with Silent Meeting, a period of reflective silence that helps create the contemplative, community-oriented environment that defines the camp experience.
